  Physical Security

One area of security that is often overlooked is the physical security aspect of an organization. Physical security is not just limited to having security guards around but also includes desktop security, laptop usage and clean desks.

Screen savers

  • Always use a password protected screen saver
  • Always lock your computer when you walk away from your workplace
  • Do not download screen savers without specific authority. Screen savers are notorious for containing viruses, or worse, shutting down the computer completely.

Laptops
It is estimated that over 1,600 Laptops are stolen each day1. Common techniques to prevent laptop thefts are to use cable locks, motion detectors, or small cards that can be inserted into the laptop, which render the hard drives useless if the card is removed. Using encryption software to secure all the files on the laptop is also a good idea.

  1. Never leave a laptop unattended or unlocked
  2. Use laptop cable locks to secure the computer to a desk
  3. Use specially designed motion-detectors

Desktop Items
Often overlooked, the items on your desk may be critical. It is easy for someone to walk away with your CDs or floppy disks. Papers on your desk may have confidential information on them, hence do not leave your desk with data lying around. Check for the following:

  • Floppies or CDs lying on your desk
  • Any papers with client information
  • Any papers with project information
  • Yellow post-it notes stuck to the monitor with important information or passwords on them

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Wear your identification badge at all times while inside premises
  • Challenge any person without identification tags and report discrepancies to Security
  • Report security incidents and security weaknesses immediately to Admin
  • Keep all your important and confidential documents under lock and key when not at your desk
  • Ensure that you lock your PC or Laptop with a password protected screen saver when not at your desk
