Passwords are typically the first line of defense against unauthorized use of a system or a service. The use of a good password can go a long way in securing the systems used. Often malicious users are able to merely guess the password and gain unauthorized entry into systems. This situation is further compounded by the availability of password cracking tools over the Internet. Given enough resources and time even a strong password can be cracked. The objective of having a strong password is to lengthen and/or delay the time required to crack the password. When defenses like personal PCs firewalls fail or are configured incorrectly (as is often the case) a secure password is the only thing that keeps hackers and worms out.
